Historic 19th Century Weaving
As part of a major research project from 1999 to 2003, the GFR Center
has prepared the manuscript of the late Joe Ben Wheat, Blanket
Weaving in the Southwest, for publication by the University of
Arizona Press. The fully illustrated book focuses on the historic
development of Pueblo, Navajo, and Spanish American textile traditions.
It will be available in fall 2003. For more information, see
http://www.uapress.arizona.edu/books/bid1509.htm.
For information about a related exhibition, symposium, lectures and
other events in 2003 and 2004, see the Events
Calendar and News.
During manuscript preparation, the GFR Center created a relational
Filemaker Pro database to manage information from over 1500 of Joe Ben
Wheat's textile analyses. We are currently reviewing and editing the
database, in preparation for its 2004-2005 distribution to the
fifty-plus museums that own these textiles. Eventually, we hope to
produce and more broadly distribute a CD-ROM containing this valuable
compilation of information.
Contemporary Southwestern Weaving
Since the 1970s, the GFR Center’s director, Ann Lane Hedlund, has
conducted ethnographic research among numerous weaving families in the
American Southwest, focusing especially on Navajo weavers. This long
term, longitudinal research documents traditional and contemporary
southwestern weaving trends and has resulted in various projects and
publications, some of which are listed under
Articles and
Bibliographies.
